Adult Killdeer displaying a 'broken wing' stance, Shoreline Park, California. Walking through a parking lot I heard the unmistakable call of a Killdeer a few feet away. I pointed my camera and took a few pictures. Only when I took this photo did I realized its behavior. These birds are known to call and fake as if it is hurt (by faking a broken wing) to lure predators away from their nest - the behavior seen here. When the predator gets close, the wing magically fixes itself and the bird flies off. This bird's nest was surprisingly only a few feet from a busy parking lot of a Golf Course near Shoreline Park, as cars and people drifted by only a few feet away.
