Orchid Lake at Sunset

Alpenglow at Orchid Lake, John Muir Wilderness. Although the direct light on the mountains had started to fade, they still held the glow of the sunset as the clouds lit up into an intense pink color. There is a reason John Muir had coined the phrase 'Range of Light' when referring to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Judging by the lack of sign of any other person, it seems this lake gets few visitors throughout the year. Hard to believe, being a mile or two from the heavily trafficked John Muir Trail. However that distance is not covered by a trail, making the trek all that more difficult and restraining all but the more ambitious hikers.
